What is Quishing?
In "quishing" (QR code phishing), scammers exploit the convenience of QR codes to trick users into giving up sensitive data, by scanning a code containing an embedded malicious web site link. Unlike traditional phishing, which relies on deceptive emails or websites, quishing uses QR codes to bypass email filters, or even emails altogether and increase the likelihood that victims will fall for the scam, as people tend to trust QR codes and may not scrutinize them as carefully as a URL or email link.
Common attack vectors include:
- Replacing legitimate QR codes with malicious ones
- Hiding destinations with shortened URLs
- Landing pages mimicking logins to steal credentials
- Abusing auto-open features on devices
What is a QR code?
A QR code, short for quick-response code, is a type of two-dimensional matrix barcode. It features black squares on a white background with fiducial markers, readable by imaging devices like cameras.
Brief History
While the QR code was invented in 1994, its wide spread use wasn't until 2011 as the codes began to be used in marketing and retail spaces, then during the pandemic of 2021 QR codes became common place as a means for consumers to avoid contact with items like menus.
